Beaver Hills Initiative

The Beaver Hills Initiative (BHI) has been selected as a finalist for the 2006 and 2007 Emerald Awards in the Government institutions category. The BHI promotes sustainable development within the moraine through cooperative efforts and has initiated a number of projects to identify and manage the environmental, social and economic features of value within the moraine. Spencer Environmental has played a strong role in BHI’s work primarily through GIS data development to identify areas in which specific land management techniques could be applied to conserve and sustain key environmental features and processes, including wildlife movement corridors, aquatic health and groundwater protection. The Beaver Hills Initiative project offers a model for others seeking to achieve similar goals on regional, national and international stages and also received in 2008 the Provincial Municipal Affairs Minister's Excellence Award in the Partnership Category. The following links provide more information regarding the above mentioned awards and more information on the project itself.

Capital Region River Valley Park

The Capital Region River Valley Park project was successful in receiving a prestigious Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA) National Planning Professional Merit Award through the Canadian Association of Planners in 2008. Spencer Environmental is pleased to have played a role in the success of this project involving the preparation of the GIS-based resource mapping for the project, selected environmental inventory work to update existing information and development of models that identified the best locations within the valley for certain activities and features. Spencer also provided environmental advice to the consortium on an ongoing basis. The resulting plan is now in a stage of public and council review, the first step of its implementation. Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Race

Since 2006, Spencer Environmental has been proud to be a gold sponsor of the Canadian Birkebeiner Ski Race held annually in February in the Blackfoot Recreation Area east of Edmonton.

In 2011, we also became sponsors of the 55 km 'Spencer Environmental Birkie Lite' race.  The firm has undertaken numerous assignments in the County of Strathcona and, in particular, within the Beaver Hills and Cooking Lake Moraine where the race is held.

Our staff members include several keen cross-country skiers and the president has skied the race several times.  The event promotes a healthy life style and represents a sustainable activity.
